Those in favor of them say that:
- you use less soap for bathing and washing clothes
- no more hard water deposits on surfaces
- dishes come out cleaner from a dishwasher.
Those against say that:
- soft water will kill plants and lawn
- soft water damages galvanized steel water piping
- soft water damages the inside of your water heater
It has been our experience that a water heater on hard water will last on average about 15 to 16 years, where a water heater on soft water will last between 8 and 9 years. We do not recommend soft water to our customers because of the corrosive effect it has on your plumbing system.
